The Story Behind the Tweet: Listen with Curiosity

Listen with curiosity, speak with honesty, act with integrity.

This #powernetworking tweet had its origins in a quote I had read the day before.  Roy Bennett is an author and writer who specializes in positive prose.  I heard this right before I was set to spend a day helping my client, Claire Billingsley, tape her latest episodes of Coffee With Claire.  The quote was relevant because if there is anyone I know who is curious about things, it’s Claire.  She also is quire honest and her integrity is beyond reproach.

We all need to listen more.As the saying goes “God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason,” is more true every day.  You’re not learning when you talk.

Speaking should be done with carefully chosen words. And after listening.  Conversation is an exchange, not a lecture.  Part of what’s challenging modern society is a lack of courtesy and carefully chosen words. As my mom used to say to me: “Think before you speak.”

And our actions, clear and appropriate.  If you take action at all.  Anything that translates to action needs to be well thought out and calculated.  Notice where action comes in the order in this quote: third, after listening and speaking.  It’s a process.
