Catching the Baby

Most of us at one time or another wonder why we were put on this Earth.  And many times The Creator gives us a glimpse or a clue into that great mystery.  Most of us go about our daily lives and don’t give it a second thought how or why certain things happen.  Then there are other times when we have the reality of why were are in a specific situation at just the right time.

I call it a “catching the baby” moment.

The story goes like this: at a fire of a multi-story apartment building a young mother is trapped several floors above unable to descend without jumping.  She might be able to get down, but the young baby she is holding might not survive the fall.  As the flames gather behind her, she doesn’t know where to turn or what to do.

Below on the street, a young make is walking by the fire.  He hadn’t ever been on this street before in his life, having gotten lost down a side street when he comes upon the horrific scene. He looks up just as the young woman is trying to descie what to do with the child.

An athlete, the young man sprints to just below the window.  “Throw the child to me,” he yells.  And the young mom does just that, saving her child (and herself moments later).

What was it that put this young man on that street and in the right place at the right time?  Sure this might be overly dramatic, but the point is, we all find ourselves in similar situations quite often–without the fire, flames and babies.

My story is about a short-term job I had with a local chamber here in Dallas.  My assignment ended after 5 months but in that time I met several plant managers.  One young man I got to know well.  Well enough that he trusted me enough to ask if I could suggest where he might find his next job.  Having met over 30 plant managers, I did see one other option that might work.  I made the call, the referral and appropriate introductions.  This was in September.  I  late December I got a call from the second manager: he had not only hired the first young man, he had created a new position for him that better used his talents.

Well, I didn’t catch a baby, but maybe my short time in that community was justified. Was that the reason I was there?

Look around you.  Pay attention to who you are engaged with and what they are doing. Look, also, at the interactions between you and them–do you have a common contact of which neither of you are aware is connected to both of you?  Is there something you can do for this person?

Life is an interesting set of actions and interactions–enjoy them!  Participate!

Relentless
