We knew the day was maybe not going to go to plan. The night before we had put Jody’s sick bike in the back of the unmarked white van of the park ranger. Serena, the ranger, promised to deliver it to the bike shop in the morning. Angel #1 makes her appearance. As she was

From the ferry to the road to camp. A full and interesting day. The ferry ride wasn’t as cold. Seeing them lash the bikes to the railing on the car deck was a bit disconcerting. Landing in Friday Harbor it was a slow climb out of town. We opted for the northern route to Roche

We got rolling early. While Jody worked, Shannon and I did a recon mission to Friday Harbor and San Juan Island. For starters we got the lay of the land where we could be dropped at the ferry terminal. Then we would stage our bikes and gear for loading onto the ferry. Arriving at least

What kind of day was it? Busy, fun and a real mix of conversation, dogs and bike prep. Up early for coffee and company with Jody. Great coffee and conversation while she did some client work. Then Shannon and I went on a mission to pick up packages and last-minute gear. Along the way was

The wide open spaces of the American west. They really exist. And it rolled out right in front of me like a carpet. Left Laramie for points west and north. No winding roads here, just a straight shot of Interstate. Well, there was that Google Maps detour through the countryside to avoid the construction traffic

The driving experience continues. Today almost 600 miles, 4 states, 2 time zones—Amarillo to Laramie. After months of triple digits, 70s at 7200 feet sounds (and feels) delightful! Finished the panhandle and climbed into New Mexico. Then sliced Colorado in half along the I-25 corridor until Fort Collins. Climbed that last 2000 feet in

The first day was a driving experience. Made it across the panhandle to Amarillo. About the only car carrying a bike. Found Cadillac Ranch. Didn’t buy the paint figuring there already were enough layers. My Luke’s 214 shirt started a conversation with a family from Meriman Park. Took their picture in front of the monument.

Since I am going completely mobile on this trip to the PNW, I thought I’d try blogging from my phone. So far, so good. A Wednesday departure from Dallas with stops along the way to see public art (mostly murals, I hope) and a short hop on the bike. More from this space over the
