Cyclovia

Imagine if you will…

There I go with that “Twilight Zone” schtick again. Perhaps this time it is appropriate.  Lt’s try that again:

Imagine if you will a mash up of a street fair, food trucks, music, a bike rally and all of it covered in a shower of bubbles.  And with that you have Cyclovia.  It is all those parts and more.

In Tucson, Arizona, at least twice each year (fall and spring), the cycling community cooperates with the city to showcase a series of neighborhoods by closing down a pathway of city streets to cars.  In their place is a parade over the span of 6 hours (usually 9am to 3pm on a Sunday). The idea is to expose people who normally traverse town in an automobile to try walking, skating, biking or whatever on these usually crowded streets.

It is a great exercise in community.  Really, people meeting one another face to face on the street.

My personal experience was by having a flat tire on my e-bike I met and saw in action a local bike non profit, BICAS. They do everything from give bikes to those who need and can use them, to teach folks, one-on-one how to repair and service their bike.  In a community of cycling, the is the perfect non-profit organization to mirror what is happening here.

At any rate, it was a great time and helped round out my sabbatical  stay in my hometown.  Nice to know that these events and groups exisit.

Relentless
