My Door Opener

We all need a door opener or conversation starter.

To the casual eye she’s blonde, short and doesn’t talk a lot.

Sally, my Cairn Terrier, has opened more doors and started more conversations than a number of my human companions.

I’ve been invited to meals, gotten jobs, even met local celebrities. Well, that last one is a stretch, but I digress.

From coffee shops to breweries to bike shops, most know her and call her by name. Many don’t know my name. However she has a magical way of helping humans engage in conversation.

Last fall I spent over a month in Tucson, Arizona, as a precursor to my relocation there.  In those 40 days, Sally and I met countless folks, most of whom wanted to meet her.  She strted conversations without uttering a word.  She’s done it now for going on two years.  Most people don’t recognize me without her.

Now, I’m not suggested you go out and adopt or buy a dog just to network.  this has been a partly therapeudic exercise that followed the breakup of a two-year relationship and the death of our senior companion, another Cairn named Harry.  Sally and I recovered from Harry’s passing by meeting people.

It worked.

I do recommend making the point of talking with people.  don’t be afraid to start that random conversation.  And if it helps to have your dog along, go for it.

Relentless (and Sally)
