How to Accept a Business Card

It happened to me at a business lunch the other day. During the obligatory exchange of business cards, I noticed something I didn’t expect. Someone studying my business card.

The lunch was with a client and his younger partner. As we traded cards, the older man took my card and immediately put it in his wallet. Not surprising, but what happened next did surprise me.

The younger guy actually held my card in front of him. He put it on his placemat and referred to it during our conversation. He picked it up and turned it over in his hands.

In other words, he was engaged. All this from a member of another, younger, digital generation.

We talk about this in this space quite often: engage your conversant, respect them, listen carefully and be prepared to follow up. That young man did that that day.

You should try it, too.
