If you stick with something long enough and in a consistent fashion, you will prevail.
Take my friend, David Wolter, for instance. I’ve known Dave since high school and when you trace the path of his career, you get the sense that this is a patient man. From his early days as a teacher, athlete and coach to his current position with a private boarding school in the east, he has been persistent and patient in setting then reaching the goals he has set for himself.
Dave tells stories of being invited to coaching clinics and outworking his peers and being recognized by elite members of the community. Of his path from school to school, each with increasing levels of responsibility. Some themes as lessons emerge:
- Persistence. Look at each stage as a step to the next. Whether that is job or relationship, learn from even those that don’t work out.
- Patience. Life takes time. You can do things to speed things up, but sometimes it is best to wait it out. You will know when to take the leap.
- It’s not about you. Always remember to listen and keep an eye out to those around you. Being less self-centered and more giving will pay dividends in that will will broaden your perspective enough to knwo what to do.
Patience, persistence and it’s not about you. The watchwords of an ultimate networker.
