Knowing the Work Rules

Work rules for laborers vary from city to city and facility to facility. Even within the same city rules can be different for the same work.

For example, here in Las Vegas, the rules for how things are rigged from the ceiling are different between the Mirage Hotel and the Las Vegas Convention Center.  At the LVCC, unionized riggers in teams of two or three assemble and hang signs. The Mirage has their audio-visual teams not only do the sign work, they also set up LANs and lay down CAT 5 cables.

The electricians are different, too.  In the LVCC, the electricians run and tape all cords and distribute power cords inside exhibit structures.  At the Mirage, the electrician plugged and routed the original power coreds and allowed our carpenters (I&D team) route any remaining power cords.

No matter the rules, be respectful of the people doing the work and always ask first if you can or shouldn’t do any particular things.  Courtesy goes a long way.
