At a seminar the other day on technology and productivity we discussed a number of applications (apps), tools and techniques and technologies that can enhance your life and build your business.
Michael St. Martin of Cognoscape was an engaging speaker and gave us many useful ideas. He presented a “day in the life” scenario of how technology helped him from the time he woke up in the morning through meetings and on to his home life. However, between all the talk of apps, instant video testimonials and social media postings, one thing stood out for me as the most memorable thing he spoke of:
His recounting of his daily dinnertime “questions” game with his 4- and 8-year-old children.
Brilliant. He got it. And he said so.
Networking and being productive is, yes, about growing our businesses and expanding our networks. At the end of the day, though, it is about connecting with people, whether it is those we want to do business with or those we love and keep closest to us.
While all of the technology and social media tools are helpful, fun and almost necessary these days, the most important thing, still, is to make the human connection. These things are just that: “things” and “tools”. The important part of all of this is to meet, talk, relate and connect with people, our fellow human beings.
I know, I know, here I am the guy who uses all of these tools overtime on a daily basis. However, the most energizing times of the day are when I connect with people and get out in the sunshine or fresh air. We need to do both, but we really need to not lose sight of what we are really trying to accomplish.
Now, get out and get moving among other people. This stuff will be here when you return.
Relentless
