Are You a Boombox or an iPod?

While I was watching a CBS News feature recently on boomboxes from the 1980s, it became apparent that our networking styles and approaches have changed in much the same way that our public appreciation for music has.

Are you a boombox networker or an iPod networker?

Like the music “sharing” of that era, boombox networkers are:

  • More vocal
  • Outgoing
  • Congregate in groups
  • Speak aloud and when they are spoken to
  • Visible

By contrast, an iPod networker is not unlike their Apple-inspired device and the culture it spawned:

  • More inward
  • Likely to meet one-on-one
  • Share information electronically
  • Focused

The truth is, an effective networker borrows from both lists: there are times when it is good to be the center of attention; and at other times, the leader.  At other times we should be part of the crowd and listen carefully.  And don’t forget to target.

Relentless
