“Beware the Ides of March,” Brutus said to Caesar…before he stabbed him to death.
OK, not the best way to open a post about networking, but let’s face it: if something is going to go wrong, it will. But fewer things can go wrong if you are prepared and you listen.
Not that anyone ever died networking (at least intentionally), but you will be better off if you are prepared when you head out to go network. So that you can handle those times when “the sea succumbs to chaos and the full moon brings high tides,” you need to be prepared by doing the following:
- Know and hone your short introductory speech.
- Do your homework before going to an event.
- Be dressed appropriately for the event.
- Bring business cards.
- Have a follow up plan.
Expect the best but prepare for the worst.
