Podcasts as an Outreach

As we all know, the spoken word has power.  Hearing someone’s voice out loud and in person is half of a conversation–what real networking is all about.

But when you can’t reach someone in person, we resort to using other tools.  You are reading this blog right now as an alternative to being in  the same room with me.  We’ve perhaps talked on the phone, one step removed from the live connection. And, since the advent of the iPod in the last decade, we now have the Podcast as a way to reach out and connect with our friends, loved ones, clients and prospects.

Recently, I had a chance to work with a client to produce an audio project.  That project has blossomed into a potential new product line and has helped my client reach her clients and prospects with useful information.

Called “The Necessary Discussion,” Joan Nye’s intention was to fill a need her clients had.  Faced with helping aging parents with their legal, medical and financial issues, Joan responded with a series of audio programs covering each of these areas.

In an interview format, the audio segments cover, in a total of less than 30 minutes, what to do for your aging parent or relative with regard to their financial, medical and legal concerns.  The aim is to get people thinking about how these things in advance of when the might become more serious issues.

You can sample the overview here: Intro to the Necessary Discussion 06-09-12 –Paul.

So far, due to compliance issues, the program has only been distributed as an audio CD.  Hopefully, it will be available soon as a downloadable Podcast or MP3 from her website or iTunes.

The project was more than just a recording session: concepting, scripting and rehearsals took most of 2 months.  The actual recording took place over 3 days.  The entire budget for the project was less than $1500 from concept to finished disk burning and labeling.

It is a tool worth exploring.

Relentless
