Embracing Tucson: The Second Celebrating Arizona Interview

The name Maynard as well as bike shops and running are a big part of Tucson.  At least from my perspective. Lisa Schnebly Heidinger and I spent some time talking about these topics on her podcast “Celebrating Arizona.” As usual, her reporter’s sense and our ability to have a balanced conversation made for a fun encounter.

As you can tell by the photo, we used the first segment to discuss various “Maynards” in Tucson.  Since we show the Maynards Market and Kitchen mug (for the now-closed restaurant on Toole Avenue), it was only natural to talk about those namesakes.  The local lore from the owners is that a couple of guys with local ties and the first name of Maynard inspired the name.  Maynard Dixon, the artist is the primary guy.  Secondly, a former railroad engineer, Maynard Flood, was further inspiration.

I actually offered up in this post, my Dad, Harry Maynard.

Lisa included a story about Maynard Pike, the maitre’d at the Arizona Inn.

The conversation inspired me to remember a figure from Tucson and Arizona politics in the 1960s, Ethel Maynard.  Ms. Ethel was the first back woman elected to the Arizona State Legislature.  An advocate for voting and other rights, little can be found about her.  No streets or landmarks named for her.

After the break we got into running and cycling stories. From Hello Bicycles to running events at Fort Lowell Park, the memories flowed.

A good podcast with lots of memories.

Thanks, Writer Girl!

Relentless
