The Garden of Gethsemane

The Mural Dog and I visited a place I’d only heard of while growing up here. In the past I would have cycled to this place (about 10 miles one way from my house), but decided to make it a stroll-and-discover walk with Sal.  Our regular weekly trip to the Mercado was postponed due to the holidays, so, being the creatures of habit that we are, we sought out our familiar territory.

The Garden of Gethsemane is a labor of love of a World War I veteran. While lying near death on a battlefield, Felix Lucero, promised God he would dedicate the rest of his life to sculpting religious statues. Upon returning to the States and finding himself in Tucson, Felix proceeded to fulfill his promise on the banks of the Santa Cruz River.

Started in 1931 and relocated twice (in the 1970s to build the Congress Street bridge and then to this location in the 1980s) the art is beautiful and a must see. While I had heard of this for years, it was remote at first, but now has a permanent, secure home in this part.  And it has easy access to The Loop.

Relentless
