More Holiday Food: NYD Pozole

Attaching a specific dish to a certain holiday is more common than you might imagine.

Obviously there is turkey on Thanksgiving. Ham on Easter. Grilled meat on Memorial Day, the 4th and Labor Day. And our aforementioned breakfast casserole on Christmas.

I might offend my Southern (and Texas) friends who snarf down black eyed peas on New Year’s Day with this, but here goes:

Pozole on New Year’s Day.

Now, I admit, I have returned to my Arizona roots. And with that relocation comes the influence of Sonoran Mexican food.

My dear sister makes this traditional hominy and meat soup every New Year’s Day. It is the centerpiece of their family holiday brunch (with sides that include her wonderful cornbread). I am so fortunate to be included in this tradition.

The good luck engendered by the dish really is just part of the glue that holds those around the table together.

Our conversation revolved around meals past and those family members who no longer join us in person but in spirit.

Another great example of how life begins at the table.

Relentless
