Earlier this year in this space I reported on and outlined an adventure coming up in the summer.
Heading North has changed a bit since that post. Let’s see where shall I start? Oh, yeah, The Fall.
Back in March I took a tumble at Tour de Zona and broke my collarbone. That really changed the direction of this trip. Instead of two separate rides coupled, it became just the San Juan Islands trip. My friend, Alan, put it best: “which ride is more important to you?” He was concerned that I might fall again on the road rally (STP) and not be able to take part in the bike packing experience.
He was right. And a wise man.
So, here are the new parameters of this experience:
- My guide and bike packing expert, Jody Wissing, and I are still hitting the islands starting July 18. Four days, 3 islands, several wineries, hikes, trails and a brewery. That part is still on.
- It is now a solo drive between Dallas and Seattle and the return trip Seattle to Dallas. All told, about 5, 000 miles of driving through 7 states and three time zones over 15 days.
Bring it on. I leave in 8 days.
No matter what, this trip will be a success. It is a journey I have to take. Me. Alone. To learn and be me again.
It’s not about others or what they are doing or what they think. For once, finally, it’s about me. No matter the outcome it will work and be a great set of memories and experiences.
It will happen. It will be an adventure. It will be interesting. It will be fun.
Then I’ll come home to Sally.
Relentless
