It’s refreshing when you meet someone who is sincere. You know, the guy who actually asks the waitress how she is and means it? Or the friend who looks you in the eye and really listens when you answer her question.
On a recent road trip I happened to be at the top of mountain peak and encountered other hikers. One of them, a scientist on sabbatical, stopped to talk with us. From the first few words, this guy was sincere. He listened when we spoke, he listened to hear (not to respond). He showed real interest in what we had to say.
It was a great exchange. All three of us got the chance to talk and really engage in an interesting conversation. It was give and take, but Rob really started it with his sincere start and approach. He made us feel as if his actions were virtuous and really what were his feelings as he conversed with us.
Naturally, it made it easy for us to return the favor and ask about him. It was easy, as the guy was interesting and approachable. We took pictures of one another and, at the end of our encounter, wished each other well.
And all it takes is some kind-hearted, true interest in another human being. Pays dividends for everyone.
Relentless
