Inventing an Event: Finding Your Voice

It seems simple enough: the leader should be the voice.  The one at the front should have the pipes to voice the organization’s image.

Well, for us, it just happened to work out that way.

The North Dallas Chamber’s partnership with Radio KAAM 770 for the Big D BBQ Battle meant we had to voice a series of radio commercials touting the event.  And, lo and behold, it just so happened that our CEO was a semi-pro voiceover actor.  A natural.

The radio station, a loyal Chamber member (and, quite honestly, the only media outlet we didn’t have to beg to help us), wrote the spots and Bruce Bradford, our CEO, recorded them in his home studio.  They aired multiple times each day at key times.

Short 30- and 60-second spots, they announced the location, date, time and features of the Big D BBQ Battle.  And when they had to be recut because of a change in host, that became academic, too.

We traded the cash value of the spots and the host time for an equivalent sponsorship level (wristband admissions, banners, promotion in advance of and at the event). This gave them visibility in our community and the Chamber with the KAAM listenership.

To finish the concept, we then had Bruce work with their host to be on stage to present the awards.  Bruce is a natural and the award winners were thrilled to get their trophies handed to them.  The “voice” reinforced the image and messaging of teh Chamber from radio to stage to personal visits at the event.

Relentless
