The Job Seekers Toolkit

Recently a friend asked me to help her prepare a workshop.  The workshop was aimed at job seekers and how they can best use networking to help them get the job they want.

Every job seeking campaign, as with every marketing and sales campaign relies on these four elements:

  • Strategies.
  • Targeting.
  • Techniques and tools.
  • Practice.

Have a strategy going into your search, your networking, your job search.  Make your plan, work your plan. If you don’t have a plan (and follow it) how will you know the outcomes?

Who are you pursuing?  What job do you want? What companies are on your hit list? Can you write a profile of your next job, your next boss, your next company and the industry it is in?

How will you find the people you are targeting?  Do you have your basic resume, your short introductory speech, your LinkedIn profile up to speed?  Are they flexible enough to be adapted to everybody on your list individually?

Then, finally, comes the actual face-to-face networking. Your mom always said “practice makes perfect.”  Where are you going to try out these things?  Do you know what to say and when?  How diverse is your list of events?

Having a plan with know targets and the tools to help you meet your goals will make the result more predictable and satisfying.

Networking can get you the job you want.

Relentless
