In Praise of the Lowly Gang Box

If you have been through set up at a trade show, you know that having ready access to everything from tools to a desk to tape is critical to making a show open on time.

So, do you have a gang box?

You know, the big box that holds all the stuff you can’t every find during set up that you need?  It comes with the crates and leaves to storage during the show only to return at tear down?

No matter the size and shape, this container of supplies and hope is something every exhibit manager needs to survive.  I’ve seen them as simple as a corrugated box up to a large wheeled crate with a microwave and a desk.  The latest one I’ve seen at work belongs to Arlene Courtney of Hewlett-Packard.  Arelene can’t live without hers.

She painted hers red so she could find it easily and it wouldn’t be lost, Arlene told me at the recent NRF Show in New York.  An event and trade show manager since the late 90’s, Arlene finds the box on wheels almost indispensable. Outfitted with drawers of tape, Velcro and office supplies, Arlene sets up camp with the box as soon as it arrives.  It even has a fold out panel inside that serves as a desk.  And it is secured with a padlock at night and in transit.

The lowly gang box has its place in even the most modern of trade show settings.  If you don’t have one, consult with your trade show partner about putting on together, if your program needs one.

And look around during set up next time you are at a show for good examples.
