We all need balance. Whether it is in our home life or our business pursuits, balance and order help us meet our goals, see the good in things and keep us happy.
But it is also a strategic thinking to look for balance.
Recently, I attended the NAAAP-Dallas’ WIN Conference and heard Kathryn Collins speak on this subject. In Ms Collins’ speech, I heard the key things that networkers need to also consider. The VP of Associate Recruitment and Inclusion and Diversity for the JC Penney, Ms Collins built her discussion of balance around these three points:
- Control
- Confidence
- Planning
Control as in being aware and guiding your actions as opposed to being a “control freak”. At the same time, don’t be a victim, be positive and don’t feel sorry for yourself (my paraphrase).
Have confidence in what you do and say without being arrogant. Remember leaders have humility. And remember that effective networkers listen more than they talk. We are learning when we listen.
Planning means having a vision. As with networking, having and implementing a strategy is what is going to take you places. But remember that all the planning in the world is ineffective without action. Be observant and note that everything is dependent on timing and chemistry.
As Ms Collins pointed out, if you can strike a balance between these three elements, then your life will be better. So it is with effective networking: be in control of yourself, have confidence and have a plan and you will succeed in building and powering an effective and useful network.
