Creating Success

Yes, you can.  Create success, that is.  Your success.

Recently my son was admitted to medical school.  It was a long journey, but well worth the wait. While he has a great support group of family and friends, he owes his success to hard work, a super work and study ethic and patience and persistence.

Patience because this journey took him 4 years after finishing his undergraduate degree.  He did graduate studies, worked odd jobs and as a teaching assistant and taking extra classes.

Persistence because he took the time to learn from his experiences: presenting to his grad committee, finding and building relationships with his peers and professors to find grant opportunities.  And, finally, getting to know the admissions people at medical schools so he could build their confidence in him.

He is one of those kind of guys who has worked at every grade he’s ever earned.  But he has also used his skills of conversation, listening and empathy to get to know people–who in turn, got to know him.  People who were important in him reaching his goals.

Needless to say, I am very proud of my son for his accomplishment.  But I am just as proud of the way he got there.  They say people who like process are sailors in that they enjoy the journey.  And that Powerboaters are goal-oriented and push the throttle to get to the destination. In this journey, Drew used his skills as both.  Successfully.

We should all learn to be both and make sure we are both patient and persistent.

The lesson here is clear: hard work, directed hard work pays off.  Even if you have the technical skills, you still need to be able to converse, listen, respond and write. Put it all together and it will pay off.

Relentless
